US President Put Forward a Series of Demands to South Africa
U.S. President Donald Trump sent his counterpart from the Republic of South Africa (South Africa) Cyril Ramaphosa a letter listing requirements, the fulfillment of which could improve relations between the countries. The Daily Maverick reports this, citing sources.
As the newspaper уточняет, the message was delivered to the president by the U.S. ambassador to South Africa, Leo Brent Bozell. The letter lists, among others, the following requirements:
- the country must demonstrate support for a policy of non-alignment;
- distance itself from opponents of the United States, such as Iran;
- give top priority to protecting farmers from violence;
- repeal the law on expropriating land without compensation;
- abandon the requirement under which investors from the United States must transfer ownership of 30% of their businesses to Black citizens of South Africa.
A representative of the African president, Vincent Magwenya, said that the president would respond to the message “in due course,” but did not specify an exact timeframe.
