The vessel was traveling from Surabaya in East Java province to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan province, the South Kalimantan search and rescue service said.
According to the agency, the vessel reported bad weather during its voyage, after which contact with it was lost at around 2:00 a.m. local time Sunday. Its last known location was approximately 80 nautical miles from the search and rescue service base in Banjarmasin.
The cause of the incident remains unclear. Search and rescue vessels and rescuers were sent to the area, and maritime authorities, the navy, and the water police are also taking part in the operation.
