“Tbilisi Marathon 2026”: Changed route, 3,500 runners and street closures.
@NGnewsgeorgia. Due to the annual Tbilisi Marathon (Tbilisi Marathon) taking place in the center of Georgia’s capital, vehicle traffic will be restricted on September 26 and 27. This was reported by the press service of Tbilisi City Hall.
From 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27:
Republic Square will be completely closed—from the section of Rustaveli Avenue (starting at the “Olive Tree”) to the intersection with Merab Kostava Street. The exit from Inashvili Street onto Republic Square will also be blocked.
From 6:00 a.m. until noon on Sunday, September 27:
Traffic will be restricted on Inashvili, Tabukashvili, Baratashvili, Dachi Udjarmeli and Gorgasali streets, on a section of the Right Bank of the Mtkvari, at Gulua Square, as well as on Gia Gulua, Skudieri, Khidi, Virsaladze and Javakhishvili streets.
Passage through these sections will be reopened in stages as the runners complete the course.
Alternative routes:
- From Melikishvili Avenue toward the Left Bank: via Chovelidze, Barnov, Makashvili, Kakabadze, Chonkadze, Amagleba, Asatiani, Jerusalem, Tumanyan, Gorgasali and Gulua streets.
- From the Right Bank: passage to Javakhishvili Street will be closed. The section can be bypassed via Galaktion Bridge toward Mardanishvili Street and the Left Bank.
- From Gulua Street: traffic toward the Right Bank will be blocked. The alternative route is via the 300 Aragveli Bridge to the Left Bank.
The Tbilisi Marathon is one of Georgia’s largest sporting and charitable events, and is being held for the 13th time. The event is organized by Hunnewell Cement (formerly Heidelberg Cement Georgia), with the support of Tbilisi City Hall and the Ministry of Sports.
In 2026, around 3,500 people registered to participate in the races, including both amateurs and professional athletes from dozens of countries around the world. As usual, the program includes a half marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km race and children’s races.
The main difference this year is the changed course. Due to extensive renovation and restoration work on Rustaveli Avenue, the organizers had to modify the usual circular route and move key sections of the course along the Mtkvari embankment and through the historic part of the Old Town.
As usual, all funds raised from registration fees will be directed to charitable projects.
