Silver denarius of Vytautas found in Poltava Region
And also jewelry identical to finds from early Christian burial grounds of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
During excavations at the Hlinski archaeological complex in Ukraine, researchers discovered a denarius of Grand Duke Vytautas and women’s jewelry identical to finds from the early Christian burial grounds of Kernavė and Vilnius, reports the publication “Ostanniy Bastion”.
The main find of the sixteenth research season at the Hlinski complex on the Vorskla River was a silver coin 13 millimeters in diameter. Kolumny (Vytautas’s personal sign) are minted on one side, and a spearhead with a cross on the other.
The artifact has been preliminarily identified as a late denarius of Vytautas, whose issuance numismatists date to approximately 1411–1430.
As numismatist Vasily Zaitsev noted in his study, the minting of such coins of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania on its eastern borders had a proclamatory purpose: they were used by the central authority not only for trade, but also to demonstrate its political influence in the borderlands.
