In France, a literary genius was accused of using AI
The writer responded to the critics.
In France, writer Télison Aurélien was accused of using artificial intelligence in creating the novel “This or Death.” This was reported by L'actualite .
Recently, an anonymous user under the username “Balance ton Claude” posted a message on X claiming that, according to the AI-detection of USA (N) program “Pangram,” the work had been almost entirely written by artificial intelligence.
In response, the publishing house Les Éditions du Boréal came to the defense of the writer’s reputation, as he is known in the country as a literary genius.
“Although Télison Aurélien only became known to the general public quite recently, he began writing 20 years ago, long before the emergence of generative artificial intelligence. He finished the first draft of his novel several years ago, and the text subsequently matured through numerous discussions with his editor, as evidenced by the successive versions of the manuscript right up to its final form,” the publisher said.
The author himself points out that he belongs to the Haitian and Caribbean literary tradition, in which “poetry, imagery, repetition, and rhythm” are important.
“It is precisely this heritage that shaped my voice. My style may be debated, but citing these techniques as evidence of the use of artificial intelligence has nothing to do with literary criticism,” he said.
In addition, Aurélien accused his critics of racism.
The protagonist of the controversial novel is a history professor who fled violence in Haiti and moved to Canada. The book, which recently received the French Prix Fnac, is on the list of novels that may compete for the Prix Goncourt and the Prix Médicis.
